Premonitory Dreams

Your dreams can be premonitions. But what kind of premonitions? Are they applicable only to you, or can they predict events on a larger scale?

Let me tell you about one of my own experiences. In 2019, I held a small workshop on mandalas and sacred geometry. We spent a great deal of time meditating. After the workshop, I had a dream in which I saw a bubble of light that I perceived as the soul of my deceased grandmother. She came down the stairs from the sky, hugged me, and warned me about an upcoming battle that I would have to face on my own. Was this dream speaking only about my personal future, or was it pointing to my own challenges within a larger, inevitable condition that would involve all of humanity?

When my husband and I moved to the place where we live now, I dreamed that many snakes were entering our house through the window. I dislike snakes, although I consider them simply animals with the right to exist in nature. But when they invade a home—a place of protection and safety—I do not welcome them. Did the dream mean that the place where I live is somehow wrong in itself, or was it suggesting that my values do not align with the values of the people who live here? Looking back, I see it as a minor warning and a reminder to safeguard my own values.

Compare the two dreams.

If you compare these two dreams, the difference lies in their energy—in what Carl Gustav Jung called their *numinous quality*. The first dream clearly possessed that numinosity, revealing the presence of a greater force. Since the COVID-19 lockdowns happened later, it is tempting to interpret the dream as a premonition. However, with a cooler mind, I prefer a less dramatic interpretation. I simply acknowledge that my personal consciousness was preparing me for the symbolic death of my old identity and for the inevitable initiation into a new version of myself.

Have you ever had premonitory dreams? What makes you think they were premonitory rather than ordinary compensations or minor warnings? What wisdom have you treasured for your own life journey?

The painting shown here is one of my oil paintings. I created it before the dream I have just described. In the back of my mind, I feel that the painting somehow drew the dream out of my unconscious and delivered the exact message I needed at that time. The artwork is now part of a private collection.
